Welcome to Shannon Smith Therapy.

As a Psychotherapist and Intuitive Eating Counsellor, and an RN with over 15 years experience, I am here to help you find your way forward.

Using a strengths-based approach, I help clients navigate a myriad of challenges.

Whether you’re fighting an internal battle, dealing with external pressures, or coping with disordered eating, you have come to the right place.

Am I a good fit for you?

I’ve always highly valued self-actualization, and this has been reflected in my personal and professional life.

First and foremost, I work with individuals who want to feel more connected to themselves. I’ve learned that when we lose sight of who we are, there are several common issues that can arise.

My specialties include (but are not limited to): stress, anxiety, disordered eating, perfectionism, over-working, self-doubt, difficulty connecting with loved ones, isolation, and depression.

Disordered eating is my area of expertise. Counselling this clientele requires a highly specialized skill-set. With over a decade of experience as an Eating Disorder Nurse and certification in Intuitive Eating Counselling, I use this expertise to benefit this population.

As qualified therapists working in this specialty are limited, I prioritize spaces for clients looking to heal their relationship with food and body.

Professional Background

  • 2003 - I completed my Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology.

  • 2007 - I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and started my career in acute inpatient psychiatry in Halifax. For the first few years, I worked with patients with severe anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and psychotic disorders.

  • 2010 - I began working exclusively in the Eating Disorder Program at NS Health. Since then, I have worked with hundreds of patients with anorexia, bulimia, and other diagnoses in all aspects of their treatment.

  • 2020 - I started my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology (MACP) to pursue a specialized career in psychotherapy. The goal was opening a private practice with a focus on counselling those with disordered eating.

  • 2021 - I obtained certification in Intuitive Eating Counselling.

  • 2022 - I completed my MACP. My psychotherapy training includes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for trauma, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Ten for Eating Disorders (CBT-T), and Binge-Focused Therapy (BFT).

  • As a Registered Counselling Therapist (RCT-C) and Registered Nurse (RN), my practice is governed by the standards of two professional colleges, the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists (NSCCT) and the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN).
